Equipment covers 85% of the Porto Mountains Park’s territory.
Four optical cameras with a range of 10 kilometers, capable of detecting fire even in “darkness”, are monitoring, since Monday, more than 5 thousand of the 6 thousand hectares of the territory of the Parque das Serras do Porto.
Supported by Compete/Portugal 2020, through the POCI and Lisbon 2020 programs, rePLANT, an “unprecedented” technological project that brings together companies, universities and research centers for the recovery and defense of the forest and fire, thus intends to “develop the forest, make it safer and prove that people and machines can work together, creating an ecosystem of greater active protection.
The Mayor of Paredes and the Association of Parques das Serras do Porto, Alexandre Almeida, quoted in a press release, stressed the importance of equipment. “Besides the four cameras installed were introduced more technological innovations, such as robots, which will make the cleaning of the forest, and mobile applications to manage the evolution of new species planted, which contribute to the grand design of putting the Park of the Mountains available to the population, “he argued.
The municipal mayor also stressed that “it is fortunate to have three private companies, Sonae Arauco, REN and Navigator, which own part of the six thousand hectares of the Parque das Serras, with the same interests in the management of the territory”.
According to Carlos Fonseca, one of the people responsible for the project and Scientific and Technological Director of CoLAB ForestWISE, “there are four chambers that cover 5.1 thousand hectares, or 85% of the territory. It should be noted that the Parque das Serras do Porto is composed of six mountains (Santa Justa, Pias, Castiçal, Santa Iria, Flores and Banjas), covering the municipalities of Gondomar, Paredes and Valongo, in the Metropolitan Area of Porto, and has an extension of almost 6 thousand hectares, an area that is now under the surveillance of the rePLANT project.
